Research Collaborations

AI can accelerate processes, make knowledge accessible, and present complex data in an understandable way. With WestAI, this translates into tangible added value for your company. Our success stories from research collaborations demonstrate how AI solutions are developed in a practical way — from data analysis to knowledge discovery. Discover how a single question can lead to innovative applications.

complingua: From Ticket to Response

Tickets, documentation, and contact information: How can dispersed corporate knowledge be made quickly accessible? In a research collaboration, the Aachen-based IT service provider complingua and WestAI developed a solution for this. An AI system connects data sources, provides precise answers, and meets strict data protection requirements. It has been in productive use for several months and supports employees in their day-to-day work.

Deloitte: Analysis of complex EU regulations

Whether it’s the GDPR, CRR III, the AI Act, or DORA, navigating EU regulations poses a challenge for companies. A research collaboration between WestAI partner Fraunhofer FIT and Deloitte GmbH Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft demonstrates how artificial intelligence (AI) can help. Together, they developed a chatbot that answers compliance questions quickly, clearly, and with citations. The result, the “Automated Gap Analysis Regulatory Compliance Tool,” is already in use and can be adapted to other use cases and industries.

FloodWaive: From Hours to Seconds

As part of a research collaboration, WestAI and the Aachen-based climate-tech startup FloodWaive investigated how large AI models can be efficiently trained for flood forecasting and adapted to local conditions. The goal was to make early-warning systems faster, more accurate, and more resource-efficient. Now, the hybrid model DeepWaive simulates heavy rainfall scenarios up to 100,000 times faster than conventional methods and serves as the foundation for impact-based early warning systems.

ORCA.NRW: A Chatbot for Videos

In a successful research collaboration, WestAI and ORCA.NRW have demonstrated how AI improves access to open educational resources. A jointly developed video chatbot makes the content of over 2,000 OER videos searchable for the first time. Learners can find relevant video segments using natural language—efficiently and in compliance with data protection regulations. The open-source tool is freely available for further development.

u-form Publisher: Automated Analysis of Free-Text Responses

u-form-Verlag (publisher) offers training programs to help trainees prepare for exams. During an initial consultation, we discussed ideas for enhancing these training programs with AI features. The goal is to use AI to automatically evaluate free-response answers and highlight errors for learners. The project was implemented jointly as part of a research collaboration with Forschungszentrum Jülich. WestAI thus provided the publisher with access to scientific AI expertise and technical resources.

University of Cologne: AI in Astrophysics

The research collaboration between Forschungszentrum Jülich and the University of Cologne, facilitated by WestAI, has led to new insights in astrophysics. Working together, the scientists used AI to study star-forming regions. In the process, they developed and evaluated various neural networks for processing spectral data. The technical and expert support provided by WestAI played a crucial role in this effort.
